Thyroid hormones excess has consequences on many systems, among them the cardiovascular and skeletal system, and on metabolism. Atrial fibrillation is the most common cardiac complication of hyperthyroidism. Moreover, hyperthyroidism is associated with an increased risk of heart failure, pulmonary hypertension, and angina as well as reduced bone density and fractures. Thyrotoxic periodic paralysis, characterized by hypokalemia associated with acute proximal symmetrical lower limb weakness, is a dangerous complication seen in thyrotoxic patients.
