Long-Term Management of Transgender and Gender Diverse Adults: The Role of Endocrinologists in Holistic Care

Studies estimate the number of transgender people in the United States to be between 1 to 1.4 million adults and this number is ever increasing. Health care professional need to be aware of health care issues and challenges of this population to be able to serve them better in long term. Poor health outcomes and health care discrimination amongst this population is well documented. Mental health issues, sexual and reproductive health, variety of general health related issues (e.g., hormone related issues, metabolic syndrome and obesity, diabetes, and cancer), substance abuse, discrimination and health insurance related issues contribute to significant morbidity amongst this population. Endocrinologists play a major role in gender affirmation, but they can play a vital role in terms of multidisciplinary treatment and holistic long-term management of these individuals. This presentation will focus upon important role of endocrine practitioners in the long term and holistic management of these individuals.
