The binary format of elite sports, reflecting the binary of biological sex, provides a protected category allowing women a realistic chance of the fame and fortune from success in sports where men’s physical advantages in power, speed and endurance are insuperable. This traditional dichotomy is challenged by male-bodied athletes with female XY Differences of Sex Development (DSD) whose experience of male puberty creates a category-defeating dilemma.
