Defining Success or Failure in Osteoporosis Treatment
Matthew Drake, MD, PhD
Mayo Clinic
All medications used for the treatment of osteoporosis have the potential to improve bone mineral density and reduce fracture risk. Despite such documented benefits, some patients who receive osteoporosis therapy will suffer a subsequent fracture. This session will focus on how to define success or failure of osteoporosis therapy in the individual patient, considering endpoints such as changes in bone mineral density, the absence or occurrence of a new fracture, and changes in biochemical markers of bone turnover.
