Thyroid Nodules

Thyroid nodules can be detected on neck ultrasonography in approximately 40% of adults, but only 5 to 10% are malignant. Although the clinical evaluation of a thyroid nodule is typically straightforward, unusual thyroid nodule presentations may occur, and the interpretation of findings on imaging, pathology, and molecular testing can be complex. Given the high prevalence of thyroid nodules in the adult population, all endocrinologists and collaborating specialists must be armed with the knowledge and skills to contend with “challenging” thyroid nodules in clinical practice.
