Challenges for Pediatric and Adult Endocrinologists in the Diagnosis and Management of Individuals With a Variant in Sex Development

In this session, challenges for both pediatric and adult endocrinologists in the Diagnosis and Management of Individuals who have a Variant in Sex Development will be reviewed, starting from three illustrative cases. After this session, participants should be able to test their skills to approach parents of a newborn with a potential variant in sex development (VSD) and design a diagnostic plan for the newborn baby; understand the ethical concerns related to genital surgery in childhood, and legislative initiatives on this matter; develop a medical management plan for adolescents who have complete androgen insensitivity syndrome (CAIS), or a 45,X/46,XY VSD, and who transition to adult care; understand gonadal germ cell cancer (GCC) risk in children and adults who have a VSD and Y chromosomal material, estimate this risk in various diagnostic groups, and develop an individualized gonadal management plan.
