Michael Riddell, PhD
York University (Toronto)
Physical activity is clearly beneficial for the physical health and emotional well-being of people with diabetes, but risk of severe hypoglycemia may be keeping patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus from reaching their exercise goals. This session will discuss considerations for how to exercise safely while maximizing time-in-range and minimizing hypoglycemia. Discussion will include how different types of exercise affect blood glucose, how to manage carbohydrate intake and insulin delivery around the time of exercise, considerations when using automated insulin delivery systems, and lessons learned from elite athletes with type 1 diabetes mellitus.
