Session Description
The Endocrine Society and the European Society of Endocrinology (ESE) are delighted to announce Professor Ashley Grossman, F.Med.Sci., as the winner of the 2025 Transatlantic Alliance Award.
Grossman is an emeritus professor of endocrinology at the University of Oxford and a senior research fellow at Green Templeton College in Oxford, U.K. He is also a consultant endocrinologist at the Royal Free London and a professor of neuroendocrinology at Queen Mary University of London in London, U.K.
The Transatlantic Alliance Award, which was launched in 2021, recognizes an international leader who has made significant advancements in endocrine research on both sides of the Atlantic—in the United States and Europe.
2025 Transatlantic Alliance Award in Endocrinology Lecture: A Rush of Adrenaline
For some years in London, I had worked in the area of endocrine oncology with a particular interest in pheochromocytomas and paragangliomas, concentrating on their diagnosis, management, and molecular genetics. However, it was with initial meetings with Prof. Karel Pacak at the NIH in Bethesda, Washington DC, and my research fellow Dr. Svenja Noelting from Munich, Germany, that I was able to expand my basic research, especially into the use of cell models and of combinatorial drug manipulation, and develop a much stronger and co-ordinated approach to these fascinating tumors. Subsequent meetings, projects, and discussions between London, Oxford, Munich, and, more recently, Zurich, have allowed our Transatlantic partnership to flourish and provide a systematic approach to these tumors, the establishment of guidelines, and the optimization of current and potential therapies. For the future, the further development of peptide receptor radionuclide therapy, possibly using alpha particles, looks especially promising.
